  3. Bridger Kitchen Diary – A closer look at the Classic Shaker in Upminster

We take you on a detailed tour of the Classic shaker we built into a grand extension on the rear of this property. Using parts of the existing property our client made the available space bigger across the whole width of the house taking parts of the garden, but not too much to create this space that can be opened up into the garden on those beautiful summer days.

Say hello to the sophisticated dreamy Classic Shaker…

… perfect for entertaining and a space you can relax in, on the edge of the suburban town Upminster in East London.

The space has been utilised efficiently with the perfect kitchen layout and an island to divide the areas into different zones. We created an L-shaped layout in this large kitchen design as they allow extra worktop and floor space, as well as lots of additional storage. They are a popular design of today’s kitchens and are great for a budding chef, which is ideal for our client as this family loves to cook.

We used two of the far-right walls to run the kitchen units along with one protruding into the open-plan space creating a divider between the kitchen and living/dining area. We added an island to the middle to create a focal point, a place to eat and extra storage and worktop space, to provide an area that can pretty much do everything.

The ceiling has been extended on some parts of the extension to create an open and airy room with as much natural light as possible, with skylights and roof lanterns.

The flooring is a genuine solid herringbone floor which has been used across the whole room, with an antique tile flowing along with the L-shaped layout. A great type of flooring for the busy family and a design statement that will certainly steal the show.

The colours chosen add a modern touch offering an extremely practical finish which offers longevity for the future use of this kitchen.

The kitchen island has been hand-painted in Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball. This colour is a dramatic lead grey with definite blue undertones which deepen the complexity of the finish. This colour brings excitement to the space with its daringly dark hue.

The rest of the kitchen has been hand-painted in Elephant’s Breath by Farrow & Ball. This is a warm mid-grey with uplifting effects providing the space with a sense of neutrality and calmness, perfectly contrasting against the darker hues and the solid wood.

Every inch of space has been used with our clever storage systems and incorporating design trends of 2019. These include open-shelves above the AGA. The idea of an open-shelf on this wall was a great idea to house the small finishing touches to complete this room. Art prints of quotes create a quirky vibe to match the rest of the design aesthetics.

The kitchen island also comes with two surfaces. The breakfast bar part is made with solid wood to create a warm and homely feel, while a quartz – Quarella Navona provides the rest of the worktop space and around the rest of the kitchen. This type of quartz presents a white backdrop with subtle grey veining throughout the surface, offering a natural and organic look to the space in which it is displayed.

You might have seen when looking around this kitchen that there are varied finishes on the classic shaker style. The island features dovetailed drawers that are flat panel with Perrin & Rowe polished chrome handles and the main kitchen area consists of recessed panels, as well as flat panel.

The Georgian style bead applied to the frame surrounding the drawers and doors is a subtle cue to those traditional kitchens, while the colours and hardware added to the design brings the kitchen right up-to-date.

The island also houses a double oven amongst the kitchen storage to provide an ultimate cooking experience that perfectly ties in with the beautiful AGA that sits to the left.

The cornices in this kitchen are the traditional style, while the plinths are an inset design making the cabinets appear to stand directly on the floor, showing the legs of the cabinetry. A beautiful timeless finish that fits perfectly within the classic shaker style and the grand space.

Due to the height of the ceiling, our client was able to hang multiple pendants and additional lights to brighten up the space that little bit more and create layered lighting. These types of lights add to the design aesthetics and provide beauty and simplicity. We love the chandelier in the middle of the dining space, a true antique!

The above shot shows the start of the impressive L-shaped layout and as we glide on round we come to the longer length of the ‘L’ making us feel right at home within this space.

We even added integrated bespoke chopping boards and a serving tray making the kitchen even more multi-functional for our client and their family.

Above and below are either end of the longer part of the L-shaped layout. One end features views out into the outside world, while the other end shows the cooking station where our client will cook and entertain their guests.

Plenty of warmth has been provided in the large open-plan space by sleek, traditional style radiators that have been painted in the dark hue – Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball. Our client has certainly got a cosy hub of the home on those cold winter nights.

One of the many popular features to the hub of the home today is a pantry of some sort. We created a breakfast pantry to the cooking area to provide our client with a handy spot to keep their toaster, coffee machine and everything needed to create an incredible breakfast area that is hidden away, but instantly accessible. Additional counter space was added to prepare the perfect cup of coffee and that delicious crisp toast when the doors are open, and the under cabinets and drawers were built for additional storage for more breakfast essentials for a busy morning ahead.

Our client opted for the Wolf Gourmet 4 slice toaster with signature red knobs. This appliance is powered with precise control for consistent results every time. It handles the thickest slices with aplomb and gives you the whole toast-browning spectrum from crisp and pale to dark brown with a distinct crunch.

A Wolf blender was also added to the mix finished with the signature red knob. The Wolf Gourmet High-performance Blender will change the way you prepare foods. This multi-tasking kitchen must-have will chop vegetables, puree sauces, whip cream, churn butter, grind grains and create smoothies beyond compare. It’s a quiet piece of kit and will open up a whole new world of taste and nutrition in your kitchen.
