How to design an Open-Plan Living Space within the Hub of the Home

Some of our kitchens have been designed into open-plan living spaces, where carefully thought out ideas have created incredible family homes.

The way in which we use the kitchen today has changed dramatically, from just a room for cooking to today’s kitchen which is all about having a space where it is inviting to cook, eat and gather family and friends to relax and entertain. A kitchen designed and built by us here at Nicholas Bridger will give the best overall function of the room.

What is there to love about an open-plan space?

There is a lot to love about an open-plan space. It can be a space that will be embraced by you and your friends for many years to come and will be the heart of all your gatherings. An open-plan space can give you a flexible and relaxed feeling that a modern home today provides.

Where do you start when creating an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area?

The overall starting point to get the most out of your open-plan space is being clear on how you want the different areas laid out.

Zoning helps you move from one activity to another without the feeling of being in the kitchen the whole time. Furniture such as a kitchen island or breakfast bar can divide the space between the kitchen area and dining/living space. Size and layout is another important factor in creating the perfect open-plan space, such as large square and rectangular rooms. If you have the space we/you will be able to create a magnificent open-plan room.

Below in this very large open-plan space we designed and created in Potters Bar, met all of our clients needs. We worked alongside our client who is also an interior designer, making full use of the space and building in special features. Just like the solid oak breakfast bar, which adds a curved element to the kitchen design. We hand painted the furniture in Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue which has a lovely rich look and feel. We built a number of clever storage solutions such as two pantry cupboards featuring pocket doors, which neatly stow away to allow you to keep the cupboard doors open while preparing food. The island acts as a divider in this large open space, including seating for three. We have serious envy right now due to the amount of natural light this kitchen will get. We handpainted the kitchen in Farrow & Ball Railings and added polished Chrome Perrin & Rowe knobs and handles for a design statement. Learn more on this kitchen.
